Digital Creatures
Digital Creatures is my third album. On this album I experimented with microtonality. This album contains tracks in 31edo, 19edo, 17edo, and the last track is in 12edo (which is standard tuning). My other albums were made in a traditional DAW, but this one was created in BespokeSynth, which is a modular DAW. I used different compositional techniques on this album, using things like LFOs to control dynamics, timing, strumming, etc. Some of the tracks on this album contain some generative elements as well.
For this album I wanted to lean more heavily into digital/electronic music. In my last album, Kauri's Forest, I used lots of samples of real instruments, which unfortunately leads to a sort of uncanny valley effect. I think from now on I'm mostly going to stick with synths, and if want to have a real instrument, then I will actually record one in real life. This is also why I chose to make a microtonal album. Acoustic instruments are mostly limited to 12tet, but digital music has no limitations, so I decided to take advantage of that. I feel like microtonal music is still very unexplored territory. You'd think by now software would have more support for it since digital sounds do not have to conform to a specific tuning, but unfortunately this is not the case. If I ever do microtonal stuff again, I think I may end up making my own DAW which isn't limited by MIDI...
